However, India's Ministry of External Affairs stated that the country is taking all necessary preparations and measures to protect its own interests.
Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal made these remarks on Friday (September 17) during a regular weekly press conference held in New Delhi. Various aspects of bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India came up in response to questions from the media during the briefing.
In response to a question from an ANI journalist, Randhir Jaiswal stated that although reports regarding the review of agreements have appeared in the media, the Bangladesh government has not officially communicated anything to them through diplomatic channels. However, the protection of India's national interest will be given the highest priority, and steps will be taken accordingly. It is worth noting that on September 11, Chief Whip of the National Parliament Nurul Islam Moni informed the media that the current interim government is scrutinizing the 101 agreements made by the previous government. Final decisions regarding these agreements will be taken only after examining whether there are any conditions contrary to the country's interests.
Regarding recent reports of attacks on the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh, the Indian spokesperson said at the press conference that maintaining law and order within the country and ensuring the overall security of minority citizens is entirely the primary responsibility of the Bangladesh government.
Furthermore, in response to a question regarding military cooperation between Pakistan and Kuwait and a proposed defense agreement with Bangladesh, Randhir Jaiswal stated that any matter that could impact India's security is being monitored with extreme caution, and necessary steps are being taken to safeguard national security. Additionally, addressing a question about Bangladesh potentially joining a Mecca defense agreement, he mentioned that India is closely monitoring the entire matter.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson also spoke at the press conference about the historic Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, which is set to expire in December 2026. He stated that the Joint Rivers Commission (JRC) is working to resolve issues related to the sharing of the Ganges waters and other shared rivers, and regular technical meetings are being held between the two countries in this regard.
